FOLDS
Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

FOLDS expands on experimental research on the topology of photographic materials and the image. Folded darkroom papers are exposed with photographic images to reveal the structures of their material and the dependence of its image on its structure.

The nuance between "object-ive of image" and "image of the object" deconstructs Eurocentric ocular centrism that began through the paradigm in perspectival vision. By bridging the boundary of physical material and the image it renders, the interplay between image and material unfolds itself as a malleable ground to deterritorialize its hierarchy.

A series of photographic and sculptural objects were researched at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Artist-in-Residence Program.

Folded darkroom papers are exposed as a sculptural object. Developed and unfolded, images are deconstructed, mapping the topography of its form and marking its dependence on its material.

Folding is a metamorphic process. Nothing is removed or added. As copper plates are folded and sensitized, the image wraps around its surface structure transforming its rendition.
